# # # 000README # # Mio MATSUEDA (University of Tsukuba) # # Modified on 12th October, 2011 # Revised on 19th July, 2012 # Revised on 20th August, 2015 # # This is a short guide on how to download TIGGE data from ECMWF's TIGGE portal # and how to plot TIGGE data on GrADS version 2.0 (or later). # If GrADS version 2 (or later) is already installed, and # you just want to make (or look at) plots with TIGGE data, # you can skip STEPs 1 to 3 and go to STEP 4! TIGGE_sample.tar.gz includes sample data. # You do not need to download TIGGE data. Just execute 02map_TIGGE_data.sh! # STEP 1: Downloading TIGGE data with 01get_TIGGE_data.sh 01get_TIGGE_data.sh is a Python script. TIGGE data in the GRIB2 format will be downloaded from the ECMWF's TIGGE portal. Before you execute this program, visit and register at ECMWF's TIGGE portal: http://apps.ecmwf.int/datasets/data/tigge (see https://software.ecmwf.int/wiki/display/WEBAPI/Accessing+ECMWF+data+servers+in+batch for more detail) After registration, please login https://apps.ecmwf.int/auth/login/ and then retrieve your key at https://api.ecmwf.int/v1/key/ . Copy the information in this page and paste it in the file $HOME/.ecmwfapirc (see https://software.ecmwf.int/wiki/display/WEBAPI/Accessing+ECMWF+data+servers+in+batch#AccessingECMWFdataserversinbatch-key for more detail) Before you execute 01get_TIGGE_data.sh, set centre, variable, initial date of forecast, forecast step, and grid spacing. STEP 2: Mapping tool GrADS version 2 (or later) can handle the GRIB2 format. If the GrADS version 2 (or later) is not installed, download and install it. You can get the latest version of GrADS from the following site: http://www.iges.org/grads/downloads.html STEP 3: Making a control and index file for TIGGE data "g2ctl" command is useful to make a control file. "g2ctl" can be obtained from the site: http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/wesley/g2ctl.html . You may need to edit a path of "wgrib2" in "g2ctl". (It would be more convenient to set a path to "g2ctl" command in .bashrc, .cshrc, or etc.) How to use g2ctl and make an index file: $ g2tl sample.grib2 > sample.ctl $ gribmap -i sample.ctl STEP 4: Plotting TIGGE data with 02map_TIGGE_data.sh Select NWP center and execute 02map_TIGGE_data.sh. Also, please edit the file appropriately if you want to plot the TIGGE data that you downloaded. EEEEEE N N J OOOOO Y Y TTTTTTTTT I GGGGG GGGGG EEEEEE !! !! E NN N J O O Y Y T I G G G G E !! !!
